The definition of character is the way someone thinks, feels, and behaves. I believe we need to teach our children to have godly character as soon as they are old enough to walk and talk.
There are several ways to teach character. The main one is by giving them a good example to follow. As parents, our children watch us day in and day out. They do as we do. It doesn't matter what we say to them if our actions do not back up our words.
Another way to teach godly character is to read and memorize God's Word. As they hear the Word and hide it in their hearts, they may see their need for a Savior and then He can do a good work in them and that will produce godly character.
As much as we would like to mold our children, it is not possible. We can help train them and teach them, but ultimately the decision to follow Christ is theirs. Only God can mold us and make us into godly men and women after we surrender our lives to Him.
As we are training our children we need to be careful that the things we watch on TV or listen to on the radio are not keeping our children from learning to have godly character. Some of the shows today teach the exact opposite of good character. They teach our kids that it is okay to lie, cheat and steal to get what they want. They show that contentment lies in having every toy on the market, or the latest and greatest new video game console. What we watch and hear takes hold of our thinking. It's just how we are made.
I love that little song Oh Be Careful.....
O be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little eyes what you see
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little ears what you hear
O be careful little ears what you hear
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little ears what you hear
O be careful little mouth what you say
O be careful little mouth what you say
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little mouth what you say
Let's really think about those words as we live our lives. God is watching us every second of every day. Our children are following our example. We are responsible to teach them how to live godly lives.
I have made a little book of character qualities from A to Z.
I am praying that these help us train our children to have godly character. Each character quality has a definition and a memory verse to go along with it.
